Physical Noise as a Barrier to Effective Communication
Physical noise distracts the receiver from receiving the information being passed to them due to distortion of information. According to Gray (2011), information distortion includes the omission, alteration, or re-organization of information. In a noisy environment, a receiver may not hear what is being said clearly, increasing the likelihood of re-organization and alteration. Physical noise can be minimized by raising speech volume to ensure that the speaker is louder than the biological noise. The speaker may use a voice amplifier, such as a loudspeaker, depending on the magnitude of the natural noise and the number of people in the audience.

Psychological Noise as a Barrier to Effective Communication
Psychological noise affects a sender’s capacity to communicate and the receiver’s capacity to interpret the information received based on personal experiences. This results in false assumptions, particularly when a sender assumes that the receiver has understood the message. Psychological noise can be minimized by encouraging feedback from the receiver to determine whether they interpreted the message correctly or not. Emotions as Barriers to Effective Communication
Emotions create a barrier to effective communication by making a receiver or sender less logical. For instance, anger may make a receiver send the wrong message. A receiver may also misinterpret a message due to anger by rejecting solutions and explanations. The effect of emotion in communication can be minimized by focusing on facts during communication and reviewing the feedback provided by the receiver to identify any bias issues or miscommunication arising from poor brain information processing.
Modes of Communication as Barriers to Effective Communication
The mode of communication can affect a receiver’s capacity to interpret a message. For example, information passed through phone or text may be misinterpreted when the sender does not use explicit language. Information passed face-to-face may also be misunderstood due to the wrong interpretation of facial expressions and gestures. It is essential to choose a suitable communication model to fit the situation because communication models influence how information is interpreted and the role of the sender and receiver in the communication process. For instance, an interactional model would be ideal in a situation that requires an exchange of information to find a solution to a problem.
