Career Progress in Advanced Nursing Roles

Career Progress in Advanced Nursing Roles

Hello Jason,

Great work with your post! It offers a personal and unique perspective on the progress that you have made as an individual toward your career goals. As you have explained, the expansion of the advanced nurse’s role has brought about increased benefits to the delivery of care processes. I appreciate the growth that you have experienced through the learning process.

I can relate to the new experience that one has during initial interactions with patients.

One starts at a place where confidence levels are low. The numerous opportunities to assess patients repeatedly increase one’s confidence significantly. This explains why your confidence received a significant boost. In addition, one understands that patients rely on them and look up to them. This makes one act more boldly to meet the patients’ expectations.

Repeated interactions with patients shed light on various health issues, such as the most common ones in a certain patient population or locality. Multiple exposures to this information lead to learning. I am impressed by your proposal to consider patients’ financial needs or abilities. Patients have varying abilities and conditions. Some can pay for their treatment without trouble, while others need assistance. It is more important to pay attention to the second group because finances can act as a hindrance to care (AHRQ, 2018). Therefore, all healthcare practitioners must understand the available financing options that ensure people with less financial resources can access quality and adequate care (California Health Care Almanac, 2021).

Career Progress in Advanced Nursing Roles

The evolution of the advanced practice nurse role has allowed practitioners to work in areas such as the emergency department, critical care, and family practice (Woo et al., 2017). A few benefits of expanding nurse practitioner skills include greater access to care and more affordable healthcare services (Woo et al., 2017). A study by Woo et al. (2017) also found positive benefits in improving patient length of stay and time to consultation. Thus, research has shown benefits since the advanced practice nurse role has expanded. Reflecting on my initial goals at the start of the class, I wanted to gain more confidence with my patient assessments, improve upon my SOAP notes, and become more familiar with the family practice setting. I can truly say that I was able to reach these goals and continue to become better as a nurse practitioner each day. I have realized that the more exposure I get from seeing patients with the same health issue, the better I become at performing my assessments and developing a plan to tend to their needs. I can confidently say that the CAT worksheets, as well as our SOAP notes, have helped me think more like a provider as we are identifying possible differential diagnoses through our patient interviews and assessments. Tailoring care to meet patients’ needs is also another great lesson that I have learned, and we should consider patients’ financial needs as well. As far as the next rotation, I do want to become more familiar with various types of insurance and how they affect care, preventative screenings across the lifespan, and the process for referring patients.
