Career Goals – Strengths and Challenges Related to Nursing Practice Competencies

Nursing practice competencies significantly promote the quality-of-care nurse practitioners provide and enhance patient safety and satisfaction. According to the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (2012), the key advanced nursing practice competencies are classified into practice inquiry, scientific foundation, policy, quality, leadership, ethics, health delivery system, independent practice, and technology and information literacy competencies. These competencies ensure nurse practitioners deliver effective, safe patient care across multiple age groups. One of my strengths related to these competencies is technology and information technology literacy. For example, I am competent in using modern healthcare technologies such as electronic health records, health monitoring systems, and wearable devices. I also have healthcare delivery competencies due to my understanding of healthcare services that should be offered to maintain health and prevent health problems. However, I have a limited understanding of collaborative practice, limiting my scientific foundation and policy competencies. Buttaro et al. (2021) argue that collaborative practice includes empowering patients to collaborate in healthcare delivery and promoting coordinated care. Therefore, I need to develop policy competencies, including demonstrating an understanding of the link between practice and policy and how to offer evidence-based care to patients with different healthcare needs.

The nurse practitioner course will help me acquire the knowledge I need to offer quality care. For example, the course provides a foundation in scientific principles applied in nursing practice, including health assessment, pharmacology, and advanced pathophysiology, leading to improved quality of care. The course will also help me attain my career goal of becoming an adult care nurse practitioner who can offer nursing care to adults with diverse healthcare needs. The course will additionally equip me with knowledge of modern patient management, diagnosis, and assessment approaches, thus enabling me to attain my goal of improving patient outcomes in healthcare settings. According to Seidel et al. (2011), nurses can apply their knowledge in real-world settings under the supervision of experienced healthcare providers. Therefore, I can use the knowledge gathered in the nursing practitioners’ course to practice as an advanced practice nurse thus contributing to my career advancement into adult acute care.
