Care Coordination and Role of the Advanced Practice Nurse

Care Coordination and Role of the Advanced Practice Nurse

The four types of advance practice nurses are nurse midwives, clinical nurse specialists, nurse practitioners, and nurse anesthetists. Advance practice registered nurses have a critical role in providing quality healthcare services, and APRNs serve as primary care providers offering many preventive healthcare services.

Nurse practitioners (NP) offer advanced nursing care, and they conduct patient assessments, develop healthcare plans, and implement health promotion activities. The primary responsibilities of NP include physical examination, implementing patient care plans, ordering and administering diagnostic tests, diagnosing healthcare problems, administering medications, patient monitoring, interprofessional collaboration, and patient education (Berg, 2020).

Clinical nurse specialists have specialized in clinical practice, healthcare research, staff training, and administrative duties. Their roles and responsibilities include overseeing nursing personnel, designing patient-centered care, creating nursing practices, making clinical suggestions, interprofessional collaboration, identifying staff training needs, resource allocation, patient counseling, and contributing to nursing research (Fischer-Cartlidge et al., 2020)

A certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) works under the supervision of an anesthesiologist to offer safe and high-quality anesthesia to all patients by following relevant practice guidelines. Their roles and responsibilities include training and supervising students, documentation, maintaining anesthesia equipment, interprofessional collaboration, assessing patients’ reactions to anesthesia, and sterilizing equipment (Bland & Wilson, 2020).

Certified nurse midwives help with deliveries, gynecological care, and counseling. They work in many healthcare settings, such as reproductive health, gynecological services, postpartum care, menopausal care, and delivery. Their roles and responsibilities include care for pregnant women, patient diagnosis, treatment, patient referral, interprofessional collaboration, STD testing and treatment, new mothers’ education, assisting in cesarian deliveries, psychosocial support, pregnancy examinations, prescription writing, and examing mothers’ health (Emeis et al., 2020).
