Brookfield Four Lenses – A Framework for Critical Reflection

Stephen Brookfield proposed critically reflective practice by analyzing professional actions and beliefs through four different lenses. These four lenses are autobiographical, learners’ eyes, colleagues’ experiences, and theoretical literature. These lenses are valuable since they offer a holistic paradigm for reflecting on a specific situation.

The autobiographical perspective requires the focus on the personal experience and predispositions of a particular individual (Chiorri & Vannucci, 2024). It can reveal biases and enhance self-insight. For instance, in the context of healthcare, patient care experiences might be examined for opportunities to better address patients’ needs empathetically and through effective communication.

The learners’ lens entails getting feedback from those you serve or educate. In healthcare, for example, it could entail seeking patients’ views to ascertain their experiences and feelings. Considering patients’ perspectives may suggest that issues are not being adequately addressed in the provision of care. On the other hand, the colleagues’ experiences lens relates to working and/or brainstorming with other co-workers with a view of getting diverse perspectives. Healthcare professionals could derive value from experience and strategy exchanges, supporting ongoing goal refinement and learning, as indicated by Bhati et al. (2023). This lens may also be used to pinpoint areas where good practices can be implemented and where mistakes should be avoided.

Further, external sources from the theoretical literature enable one to question and transform one’s mode of thinking. In this way, using scholarly sources and evidence-based research, healthcare professionals can substantiate their work and remain up-to-date with the recent developments in the industry. It ensures that practice is based on current and accurate information. For instance, if one is motivated to enhance patient relations in healthcare, the application of Brookfield’s four lenses can go a long way in enhancing this prospect. Self-awareness may discover some uneasiness or prejudice, patients or clients may point out misunderstandings, colleagues can give practical suggestions, and finally, literature may hold effective ways of communicating. Altogether, these lenses provide a comprehensive perspective on how to reflect on and enhance the practice that is performed by healthcare professionals.
