Beliefs About Leadership

Beliefs About Leadership

Leadership is a continuous process that requires learning from past mistakes and implementing recommendations from colleagues and followers. Becoming a good leader requires identifying individual strengths, weaknesses, opportunities for growth, and threats. Globalization has created a need to understand the concept of global leadership and how one can become an effective global leader. This essay reviews my vision in global leadership, how I am making the vision manifest, how I am becoming myself within a leadership context, and my process of becoming.

Vision

I want to become a recognized global leader in a large international company such as Amazon, Walmart, or Apple. I intend to be recognized for my ability to deal with the main challenges leaders encounter in global leadership. One of the main challenges is the failure to integrate multicultural teams in relation to negative stereotypes and prejudice. According to Henson (2016), contrasting stereotypes are a major hindrance in effective global leadership because they create conflicts and a lack of empathy towards others’ actions and feelings. The second challenge is differences in working styles. Every country has its unique way of doing things, thus creating differences in attitudes towards work and working styles. Therefore, leaders should understand different working styles influencing followers and an organization’s performance. I intend to continuously improve my leadership skills and enhance cultural awareness to become an effective leader.

Manifesting the Vision

One of the strategies I am taking to manifest my vision is applying for vacant job positions in globally recognized international companies. I am currently looking for vacant managerial positions to begin my journey as an organization leader until I get to top positions. The second strategy I am taking is taking a short course on cultural awareness to familiarize myself with different cultures. Most international organizations look for an individual with cultural awareness due to the diverse nature of their workforce. Therefore, I need to create a competitive advantage in the job market by understanding the critical beliefs, values, and practices of people from different cultures to secure a job position in an international organization. I am also looking for opportunities to interact with people from different cultures to get firsthand information about different cultures.

The third measure is attending various global leadership conferences that bring together leaders from different regions and create a forum to discuss trends in global leadership and how to become an effective global leader. During the conferences, I interact personally with leaders in global companies to understand the challenges they may be experiencing and the measures they have taken to address them without affecting their leadership reputation. I have also been reading case studies on global leadership and leadership in international organizations. I recently read a case study on PepsiCo leadership. According to Church (2019), PepsiCo is among the global companies with the best leadership in the world. Due to her leadership expertise, there are many case studies on Indra Nooyi’s leadership studies. I have been reviewing these case studies because my vision is to gain global recognition due to my good leadership, like Indra Nooyi. I have also been taking small leadership positions in my workplace to develop my leadership skills gradually. In addition, I am taking a course on global leadership to familiarize myself with essential concepts in global leadership and what to expect as a global leader.

Becoming myself within a leadership context

I have been working on developing myself within a leadership context. One of the ways through which I am becoming myself within a leadership context is by using my strengths to develop leadership capabilities. For example, I have been effectively leveraging my good communication skills to communicate effectively as a leader in different leadership contexts. The second strength I am leveraging is good problem-solving, and I have been using this strength to improve my conflict management skills. Conflict management is important in leadership because it helps maintain a good relationship between leaders and followers and among followers, thus increasing the chances of realizing a shared goal. I am also applying my interpersonal skills to create peaceful coexistence among people under my leadership, thus improving my leadership capabilities.

I am also becoming myself within a leadership context by observing my values in leadership. For example, I uphold transparency in my leadership by maintaining a clear flow of communication and engaging everyone in decision-making. I also uphold honesty in my leadership and focus on avoiding conflicts of interest, especially those that could create tension between my followers and me and among the followers. Working with my followers as a team has also been vital in becoming myself within a leadership context. I view myself as part of a team instead of a leader and encourage everyone to express themselves freely.

I have also adopted a servant leadership style to become myself within a leadership context because I value being of service to others rather than being served. Servant leadership is a leadership style that prioritizes followers’ well-being, growth, and empowerment (McDaniel, 2022). One of the characteristics of this type of leadership is humility. This includes not promoting oneself and putting others first. The second characteristic is valuing people by acknowledging their feedback and recommendations. The third characteristic is trust, characterized by willingly taking risks for followers because servant leaders can be trusted due to their dependability and authenticity. The fourth characteristic is listening. This includes listening to followers without judging them to encourage learning from each other and understanding the followers properly (Van Dierendonck & Patterson, 2010). The fifth characteristic is caring, which includes having followers’ interests at heart and demonstrating concern for followers. I am also implementing my beliefs in my leadership to lead my followers effectively. For instance, I believe in leading by example. Therefore, I always ensure I do the right thing to set a good example for my followers. I have also been showing accountability for my actions by encouraging my followers to question me whenever they disagree with what I do.

The process of becoming

I would describe my process as both challenging and exciting. My main challenge has been accessing some of the opportunities I need to realize my vision. To begin with, there are limited job opportunities in managerial positions in multinational organizations, and current vacant positions also require experience that I do not have. Secondly, most leadership conferences are held in regions away from my area of residence. This makes it hard for me to attend because, in some instances, I may be required to travel to another state and spend a night in a hotel because most of the conferences last two days.

The most exciting part of my process of becoming has been reading about Indra Nooyi. According to Howell & Wanasika (2018), Indra Nooyi is one of the global leaders I admire due to the significant role her leadership has played in PepsiCo’s performance. I also admire her leadership journey and how she has overcome many odds to get to where she is as a female leader in a globally recognized multinational company. I admire her courage in dealing with stereotypes about women’s leadership and sticking to her leadership responsibilities.

The second exciting thing is interacting with different global leaders at leadership conferences. I have met some leaders I have read about on the internet and in various case studies, motivating me to work on my growth as a global leader. The third exciting thing has been gaining new information on trends in global leadership and measures I can take to overcome challenges in global leadership. Acquiring new information is exciting because I can implement the knowledge in my leadership until I achieve leadership expertise to gain global recognition as a good leader.

Conclusion

My journey towards realizing the vision of becoming a recognized global leader in an international company such as Amazon, Walmart, or Apple has been exciting. I have been implementing various measures to manifest this vision. For example, I read case studies on effective global leadership, attended conferences on global leadership, applied for vacant job positions in globally recognized international companies, and took a short course on cultural awareness to familiarize myself with different cultures. I am also becoming myself within a leadership context by using my strengths to develop leadership capabilities, observing my values in leadership, adopting a servant leadership style, and implementing my beliefs in my leadership to lead my followers effectively. Although the journey has been exciting, there are various challenges  I need to deal with, such as difficulties in accessing some of the opportunities I need to realize my vision and the location of conferences outside my area of residence.
