Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)
The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is a multifaceted interconnectivity of nerves that governs the regulation and synchronization of numerous involuntary physiological processes, including but not limited to cardiac activity, gastrointestinal motility, respiratory function, and endocrine glandular excretion (OpenStax, n.d.; Saladin et al., 2015). The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is bifurcated into two distinct branches, namely the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS).

The sympathetic nervous system serves as the organism’s “fight-or-flight” reaction and is triggered during periods of stress or danger. The physiological response involves increased cardiovascular activity, respiratory rate, and metabolic output, thereby priming the organism for action (OpenStax, n.d.; Saladin et al., 2015). Furthermore, it elicits pupillary dilation and decelerates the digestive system and salivary excretion. Conversely, the peripheral nervous system assumes responsibility for functions about repose and nourishment in periods of relaxation. The observed physiological effects include deceleration of the cardiac rhythm and respiratory rate, constriction of the pupil, and an increase in salivary secretion (OpenStax, n.d.; Saladin et al., 2015). Furthermore, it diminishes the body’s energy requirements and activates the digestive system.
To achieve proficiency in the subject matter pertaining to the autonomic nervous system components, I employed various academic methodologies. In pursuit of a more comprehensive comprehension of these subjects, I thoroughly read many scholarly tomes and digital repositories, including OpenStax and Google Books. Furthermore, I used pedagogical audio-visual aids that pertained to the subject matter to enhance my comprehension of each theme’s anatomical and physiological underpinnings. In addition, I rendered schematic representations of the autonomic nervous system to enhance my cognitive grasp of the underlying principles. Ultimately, I attempted to assess my comprehension by engaging in a series of exercises that pertained to the subject matter. By implementing diverse pedagogical approaches, I have effectively acquired a comprehensive understanding of the constituent components of the autonomic nervous system and their respective physiological roles.
