Authoritative and Democratic Types of Leadership

Authoritative and Democratic Types of Leadership

I have worked with a leader who constantly switched between using authoritative and democratic types of leadership. Accordingly, an authoritative type of leadership was commonly employed, and it was considered effective as it facilitated quicker results and kept individuals on their toes. However, over time, most of the employees began quitting due to high pressure from the job and increased job dissatisfaction. Furthermore, most of the employees, including myself, often worked in fear of the boss, and it was difficult for us to air our views in a meeting. Most of the individuals’ suggestions were highly innovative and creative, but we could only share them among ourselves. With complaints and low turnover, the boss would switch to democratic leadership, which was only effective depending on the task. In most cases, it slowed the process, and given the boss’s authoritative style, most people did not trust him enough to open up and work collaboratively.
