Assistive Technologies for Educators
The assistive technologies already built into computers can be found in the Ease of Access Center or utility manager. For Microsoft Windows, this is found by going to the Start Menu > Control Panel > Ease of Access Center. Some of the features found here are the ability to change the size and color of text, on-screen keyboard, high contrast settings, and audio descriptions (Gunter, Glenda, and Randolph 39). There are also options to have the computer read text aloud or provide visual cues when the Caps Lock or Num Lock keys are engaged. These features can be very helpful when working with students who have vision impairments or other disabilities that make it difficult to use a traditional keyboard and mouse. For OS X, the built-in assistive technologies can be found in System Preferences > Accessibility. There are options for vision, hearing, physical and motor skills, and learning and literacy. Apple also has a few apps that can be downloaded from the App Store that provide assistance, such as Voice Dream Reader and Proloquo.
The online world also has a wealth of assistive technologies that can be very useful for educators. One site that offers a variety of tools is the Assistive Technology Industry Association (ATIA) website. Students and teachers can find software, apps, hardware, and services for various needs (Dawson et al. 232). There is also a lot of information about upcoming events and conferences, as well as resources for educators. Another site that offers assistive technology tools is the National Technical Assistance Center on Accessible Educational Materials (AEM). This site has information on selecting and using accessible educational materials and a library of resources. In addition, websites like CAST and Learning Ally also offer a variety of resources that can be very helpful for educators working with students with disabilities.
