Assessing a Healthcare Program-Policy Evaluation

Assessing a Healthcare Program-Policy Evaluation

Describe the healthcare program or policy outcomes.

The health policy selected is the hand hygiene policy; this policy is among the most important in healthcare settings. This is because most pathogens can be transmitted from physicians to patients (Policy & Manual, 2017). The goal of this policy is to reduce the risk of infection to the staff and patients.

How was the success of the program or policy measured?

The success of the policy was measured by identifying the rate at which people embraced the habit of washing hands in the healthcare setting. The increased rate of washing hands or sanitizing hands before attending to the patients is an indicator of success. The reduction in the cases of diseases caused by poor hygiene is another indicator of success.

How many people were reached by the program or policy selected?

The policy selected reached out to many individuals in healthcare. It reached both the patients and the providers. The main targets of this program were the nurses and the physicians, and they were reached out by this policy.

How much of an impact was realized with the program or policy selected?

This policy had a great impact as it changed the behavior of the providers as a significant percentage of the infections that are transmitted through dirty hands were reduced (Gould et al., 2017). This means the program had a substantial impact on the providers, and most of them adopted the best practices.

At what point in program implementation was the program or policy evaluation conducted?

The policy was evaluated after the implementation process was complete to determine its effectiveness of the policy. This should be done immediately after the program is successfully implemented.

What data was used to conduct the program or policy evaluation?

The data used in the policy evaluation includes data related to the cases of infection among health providers and patients. This data is essential in evaluating the policy as it shows whether the policy worked or not. The data relating to the efficiency and effectiveness of the policy was used in the evaluation processes (Policy & Manual, 2017). For instance, if no change was identified after the policy’s enforcement, it means that the policy was not effective.

What specific information on unintended consequences was identified?

The information related to the increased cost of healthcare is among the unintended consequences that were identified in this policy. Also, the information about the best practices developed among the providers after the enforcement of the policy is another essential information identified.

What stakeholders were identified in the evaluation of the program or policy? Who would benefit the most from the results and reporting of the program or policy evaluation? Be specific and provide examples.

The stakeholders identified in the evaluation process include the doctors, nurses, patients, and other staff who work in the records and IT departments. These are the individuals who are most affected by this policy, and their behaviors determine the effectiveness of the policy. The individuals who would benefit most from the policy evaluation are the administrative personnel of the health organization because they will be able to determine whether the program is successful. The other group includes the healthcare providers, and the evaluation results will tell whether they need to adjust their behaviors for the policy’s success.

Did the program or policy meet the original intent and objectives? Why or why not?

The policy met the initial objectives and intent to improve the health of the patients and healthcare providers. The primary goal was to reduce the cases of infections among the staff and patients, and this goal was achieved. The improvement of hygiene among the providers is an indication that the intent and objectives of the policy were achieved.

Would you recommend implementing this program or policy in your place of work? Why or why not?

I would recommend the implementation of this project in the workplace in order to improve the quality of health among the employees and other players like the managers. The health of the employees should be the priority of every organization (Mbakaya et al., 2017). For instance, the implementation of this policy in the wake of COVID-19 can help control the pandemic.

Identify at least two ways that you, as a nurse advocate, could become involved in evaluating a program or policy after one year of implementation.

As a nurse advocate, I could take part in evaluating the policy by helping in the collection of the data that could help in assessing the policy’s efficiency and effectiveness. Further, I could also provide some input in the process by providing the knowledge that I have regarding the evaluation process.
