Article Summary
The first article is by Tullius et al. (2022). They believe that divorce impacts the mental health of children and adolescents. In this specific study, the researchers begin by examining literature that clearly shows the severe impacts of divorce and separation on the mental and emotional health of the children. This research focused on examining the relationship between mental health and adolescent divorce. The researchers, therefore, undertook the study by assessing the timing of the emotional behavior problems. In other words, Tullius et al. (2022) were more concerned with the emergence of emotional behavior problems during or after the divorce. The researchers used the first four waves of TRAILS, also called the TRacking Adolescent’s Individual Lives Survey cohort. The emotional behavior problems were then measured using the Youth Self-Report (YSR). The researchers also applied the multilevel analysis to assess the effects of divorce on emotional behavior problems. The level of internalizing and externalizing challenges remains higher after divorce. The research confirmed that mental illness was not witnessed before the divorce.
The second article is by D’Onofrio and Emery. In this article, D’Onofrio and Emery (2019) point out that family instability is becoming very common today. In fact, in their opinion, this trend is causing harm to children caught up in the divorce and separation process. In their review, the researchers identified cases where alternative marriage approaches like cohabiting could be used in a relationship. In the study, the researchers have determined that about 60 percent of American Children live with their biological parents, which means that almost 40 percent are not living with their biological parents This research also reveals that divorce and separation are connected to maladjustment and academic challenges. Children who come from divorced families also have disruptive behaviors and mood swings. All these are signs of depression and mental illnesses. The study also reveals that academic underperformance is among the mental challenges children face due to divorce.
Article Analysis
This article by Tullius et al. is a research that can be generalized and used to try to understand the case of divorce in many families around the world. Since it was a qualitative analysis, the research offered more information that showed the participants’ emotional attachment to the topic. A deeper look into this study also shows that the investigation has gone a notch higher to examine whether emotional and mental illnesses in the cases of divorce happen before the parents separate after they do or even during the separation period. The research has helped clarify that there are instances where the teenager develops emotional and mental problems before the divorce; however, in many cases, the young adult develops mental and emotional illness after the divorce. The gap that is left in this study is that the researcher has used only a qualitative approach. Therefore, the research that will be done will employ both qualitative and quantitative research methods to ensure that the results give a much clearer picture of the impacts of divorce on the child’s mental health.
The second article, on the other hand, has helped uncover various challenges that emerge due to divorce. In this research paper, one can argue that the researchers have provided more detailed information about the impact of divorce. For instance, they have identified other mental illnesses apart from the commonly discussed basics. For example, the research has identified that mood swings are among some of the child’s challenges due to divorce. The researcher is also very effective in determining how divorce causes these mental illnesses. For instance, researchers have identified that divorce causes an interruption in children’s life. Also, divorce can sometimes lead to conflicts that affect the children caught up with the warring parents. The only weakness of this research paper is that it is a review. Reviews tend not to give information that cannot be generalized, but they are excellent at giving information on the topic. Additionally, the researcher does not discuss the weaknesses of the articles they have reviewed, making it difficult for the information to make conclusions on events within this topic. This gap is what this research will fill.
