Article Review-DDOS attack on Google Company.

After conducting my internet search, I found the article on the DDOS attack on Google Company. Just recently, in 2020, Google reported one of the largest distributed denial of service (DDOS) attacks on record. Even though the attack peaked at 46 million requests per second (fps), Google managed to stop this form of attack (Salim et al., 2020). The attack happened on 1st June at 9:45 am and targeted the Google Cloud Armour user possessing HTTPS for 69 minutes. The attack was also composed of over 5,200 source IPs from 132 nations contributing to it (Salim et al., 2020). The report by Google indicated that this was the largest attack ever reported among the Layer 7 DDOS attacks that was reported to date. This attack was identified to contain 76 percent more than the previous record.

The senior project manager at Cloud Armour, Emil Kiner, and the technical lead director, Satya Konduru, noted that the attack was tuned so that Google would receive daily requests from Wikipedia in just ten seconds. The traffic received was influenced by the DDOS attack and was detected early in the lifecycle by Google Cloud Armour, which alerted customers of the attack and availed effective recommendations as protective measures for the organization (Salim et al., 2020). These protective measures were then deployed before the attack could reach its peak, enabling the users to regain their functionalities. The attacks launched against Google were similar to those launched in the Merris method of attacks that were identified to break DDOS records.

Various pieces of advice were issued by Google concerning the prevention of DDOS attacks. The organization under this threat should strive to deploy defenses and controls at multiple layers of the environment (Bhardwaj et al., 2021). Also, the infrastructure network provider should be equipped to protect web applications and services from targeted web attacks (Bhardwaj et al., 2021). This form of protection also includes performing threat modeling to develop reactive strategies that necessitate urgent protection mechanisms in such attacks.
