Art History Introductions
What is your graduation year and area of study?
My current area of study is human resource management, and I will graduate this year.
Do you have any previous experience in either making or learning about art?
I have previous experience in learning about art through the Internet. I am always curious to know the history of any art I come across and its meaning. I have also visited different art galleries and exhibitions to view art and learn about it.
What is one specific challenge you anticipate in this class, and what is your current strategy to meet this challenge?
One of the specific challenges I anticipate in the class is complex assignment questions about art requiring applying the knowledge gained from the course. My current strategy to meet this challenge is reading other students’ discussion posts to get insight into what I should consider when answering art-related questions.
What is your definition of “art?” There is no right or wrong answer.
Art is a masterpiece created using a person’s imagination and drawing skills to send a specific message or express feelings and ideas.
Must art be created by an “artist,” or can anyone create art?
Anyone may create art because it mainly requires the combination of various art elements. According to Williams (2019), the main elements of art are line, value, form, shape, color, space, and texture.
Can an art object serve a functional purpose?
An art object can serve a functional purpose by enhancing the objects people use daily to serve utilitarian purposes. According to Stuart Mill (2015), utilitarianism advocates for actions that improve a person’s pleasure or happiness. Therefore, art can be used to make a place look beautiful, thus creating happiness or pleasure when people admire the place.
Must an art object contain a deep sense of personal, spiritual, or political meaning?
An art object can express a person’s ideas or feelings without containing a deep sense of spiritual, personal or political meaning.
Does art have a responsibility to be beautiful?
Although most people are attracted to beautiful art, art does not have a responsibility to be beautiful because the most important thing is the message passed through the art and the emotions it evokes.
