Applying Effective Communication to Business Management

Applying Effective Communication to Business Management

Introduction

Communication is the process of exchanging information between a group of parties or individuals. When communication is made effective, various advantages accrue to an organization or even an individual. Effective communication is achieved when there is clarity regarding the shared information and the two parties involved can relay their messages without any barriers (Siitonen & Aira, 2019). Notably, this is only possible when the parties have strong and good communication skills. Communication skills were central to this course; thus, finishing it puts me in a better place to succeed in and out of school. Essentially, this is so because the skills I have acquired from the course can help me communicate effectively in various workplaces and respond to communication-related issues, such as solving communication problems in the organization.

Application of the knowledge in my field of study

The communication skills course has equipped me with various competencies. One of them is the use of email communication. In my future career, I will be able to communicate effectively using emails because, during the course, I understood how emails are used correctly through such methods as using proper titles and avoiding slang and sarcasm. Additionally, I have learned that emails should be concisely focused on the point and avoid unnecessary dialogue in communicating the intended message to the receiver. Since emails are not the only aspect I have learned in this course, I will ensure I develop to become an effective communicator in all forms of communication used at the workplace. For instance, I will embrace showing respect, asking questions, and listening keenly to co-workers. As a result, strong relationships will be built and maintained with colleagues.

Area of Strength

One area of strength in my communication skills is good listening. I manage to listen to others without interrupting them while speaking. Further, my strength in this aspect is supported by my ability to listen to verbal and nonverbal messages. Notably, this means that when one is communicating with me, I observe all forms of messages that can be read from nonverbal forms, such as facial expressions and tonal variations. From the course, I learned that listening is an important aspect of communication that can be taken lightly and affect the outcome of the intended message. One way I have enhanced my communication ability is by embracing emotional intelligence. Being an emotionally intelligent individual helps me grasp my feelings and those of others. Essentially, this can help me relate with others effectively and thus will be worth bringing to my field of study.

Area of Opportunity

An area of opportunity in communication relates to controlling oneself during tense scenarios. I would like to be more assertive in such situations as being passive. From the course, I have learned that being assertive helps communicate confidently and passionately. Since I think I cannot do this effectively, this is an area of opportunity for me. During confrontations and tense situations, I find it hard to remain calm and communicate without hitches. However, exploiting the opportunity will help me to become more assertive and thus become a good conflict handler.

Conclusion

During the entire course, I have learned important aspects of communication. I am better placed to become a better communicator in my field of study. The course has enabled me to realize the areas of strength upon which I can base my excellence. Further, the course has helped me to identify areas of weakness that I consider to be areas of opportunity that require improvement.
