Application of Course Knowledge
Advanced nursing practice epitomizes nursing educational excellence. These professionals can handle complex clinical situations and lead healthcare systems toward high-quality and effective care. The need for advancing nursing practice dates back to the 1890s when care gaps were apparent in rural areas. In Western countries where these care gaps were apparent, NPs utilized an established care model to assess and treat patients. The concept of advanced nursing practice became prominent in the U.K. and the U.S. between the 1960s and 1980s. Nurses, in this regime, found more roles in patient care. While their utility and value in patient care were highly recognized, the educational structures, skills requirement and acquisition, and role identity that supported advanced nurse practice were established. Informed by a growing demand for healthcare, the advanced practice role developed considerably in the 90s. Currently, advanced nursing practice has a clearly defined scope, role identity, and educational requirements.
Despite the development witnessed in the advancement of nursing practice over time, advanced practice nursing is still faced with multivariate challenges. Regulatory and institutional barriers hinder nurses from reaching their full potential in patient care. Institutional barriers such as organizational bylaws, admission privileges, and lack of recognition are other hindrances to nursing practice (Kleinpell et al., 2022). Regulatory barriers, such as restrictive policies that prevent nurses from practising independently, jeopardize high-quality patient care and discourage nurses from pursuing various specializations.
The AACN Essentials defines core competency required for nursing school graduates. A domain that I excel in is the domain of interprofessional partnerships. I believe I possess the prerequisite collaborative and communication skills to foster stronger partnerships with other caregivers. An opportunity for growth is in the domain of informatics and healthcare technologies. I am yet to learn about all the available health information technologies necessary for care provision.
