Application of change theories in the implementation of evidence-based practice in nursing

Change is inevitable in the healthcare delivery industry. Many theories have been postulated to analyze the impact of change in a healthcare organization. The theories include social cognitive theory and Lewin’s change theory. Our assignment writing help is at affordable prices to students of all academic levels and academic disciplines.

Lewin’s theory has three steps that are used to understand change. The three steps are unfreezing, changing, and refreezing (Burnes, 2019). For this theory, there must be the creation of a perception that change is required. It would then entail moving towards a new level of behavior and solidifying it as a new normal. In unfreezing, there is the awareness creation of how the organization’s current way of operations is not productive (Hussain et al., 2018). The changing phase is implementing the change. The refreezing stage involves conditioning the individuals not to revert to the old ways (Hussain et al., 2018).

The social cognitive theory outlines the influence of personal experiences, environmental factors, and others on behavior change. For change to happen, individuals must have self-motivation and self-efficacy (Shamizadeh et al., 2019). The individuals must believe that they can adapt to change and have the ability to go through the change process. Lewin’s theory is action-oriented and does not consider personal experiences, while social cognitive theory focuses on personal experiences and external factors.

The theory that makes sense for implementing my EBP project is the Lewin’s theory of change. Pressure ulcers are common in hospitals. Hence, the healthcare organization will be informed of the dangers of pressure ulcers, such as reduced patient satisfaction and patient outcomes. My mentor has also utilized Lewin’s theory of change with positive results. The result was a reduction in medication-related errors.
