Clinical Signs of Anxiety

Obsessive Compulsive Behaviors

Nursing Interventions

When Lauren trusts the nurse, she will be more comfortable and open to discussing her condition and treatment plan. The nurse should assist Lauren in identifying possible precipitating factors. Once Lauren is aware of factors that precipitate her social anxiety, she will be able to interrupt an escalating anxiety episode. Lauren’s treatment plan might include anxiety medications (Rose & Tadi, 2022). It is the nurse’s role to ensure the patient takes her anxiety medication as prescribed. Lauren shows signs of negative internal dialogue when she describes her feelings towards her popular classmate. The nurse should educate the patient on the importance of positive internal dialogue and the negative impacts of negative self-talk. The nurse can encourage the patient to verbalize her internal thoughts so that they can identify the more positive ones.
Exercise and physical activity are other essential nursing interventions. Lauren should be encouraged to participate in regular physical activity to increase endorphin levels, decrease anxiety, and improve well-being. Non-pharmacological interventions such as relaxation techniques and guided imagery enhance the release of endorphins. Since Lauren will be discharged from the hospital later, the nurse must ensure she is independent and comfortable at home in case of an anxiety episode. The nurse should identify resources Lauren can use at home to manage and prevent breakthrough anxiety. Lauren should also be educated on how to cope with anxiety.
