Next term, I will be taking HRM 341 – Employment Law, a course in my major. I anticipate learning more in-depth information about various topics related to employment law. This course will contribute to my knowledge base by providing specific information about employee rights and the legal protection of those rights (Bagenstos, 2020). I will use it to handle employee claims in the workplace. This course will help me build a stronger foundation in my major, contributing to my preparation for my future career. I understand the employment-at-will doctrine is a key topic in this course. The at-will employment doctrine is a doctrine of United States labor law that says an employment contract between an employer and employee may be terminated by either party at any time, for any reason (or for no reason), with or without notice (Dean & Fraser, 2018). Accordingly, this will help me anticipate potential problems in my future career as an HR professional. Topics such as employee recruitment and selection, training and development, and performance appraisal will help me build my knowledge to be better prepared to staff a company in the future. Also, learning about occupational safety and health will help me create a safer work environment for employees. For instance, I will be able to identify potential hazards in the workplace and take steps to mitigate them.

The course also provides the Family and Medical Leave Act and allows eligible staff of covered employers to take unpaid, protected leaves for particular family and medical reasons (Jardine, 2021). It will help me understand an employee’s situation when they need to take time off for these reasons. I will also be more aware of the company’s policies on this matter and how to best handle these situations when they arise. In conclusion, I believe this course will be extremely beneficial to my future career as an HR professional. It will help me build a strong foundation in my major and equip me with the necessary knowledge and skills to succeed.
