Analyzing the Interconnection Between Academic Integrity, Professional Practices, and Scholarly Ethics
Part 1
The term academic integrity remains common in the confines of teaching and research. It is an umbrella term that encompasses all actions targeted at ensuring honesty, responsibility, and fairness in academic studies. It also means maintaining accountability to self and the work of others. Academic integrity is integral to writing. Integrity in writing requires the author to use their own words and put measures in place to ensure they do not mislead the reader about whose idea it was. It allows the author to freely build on their ideas, assert their creativity in writing, exploit their knowledge and understanding of the topic under scrutiny, and express themselves courageously while acknowledging the work of others (Holden et al., 2021). In academic and professional nursing writing, integrity demonstrates nurses’ recognition of professional nursing values and underpins their respect and trust for other knowledge creators before them.
Subsequently, scholarly ethics are also important aspects of professional practice. Scholarly ethics are the normative values that guide research and academic writing to ensure transparency, accuracy, and fairness in academic and professional activities. All healthcare professionals have specific ethical codes that guide their professional practice. In nursing, the normative ethical codes guide nursing clinical decision-making processes and set forth specific standards for professional nursing practice (Poreddi et al., 2021). In the pursuit of high-quality, safe, and acceptable nursing care, ethics informs nursing decisions and duty to their patients. They implore professional nurses to act in the best interest of their patients and do whatever it takes to safeguard their safety.
In academic writing, integrity goes beyond ensuring the writing is an actual presentation of one’s ideas. It also entails maintaining responsibility for meaningful and high-quality writing. Several tools exist that can help authors enhance the intercity of their writing. These include Grammarly and Turnitin. These tools contribute to academic integrity by ensuring all academic write-ups are standardized and of high quality. While Grammarly improves the appeal of the write-up by eliminating grammatical errors, Turnitin ensures academic integrity by ensuring the write-up is an actual presentation of one’s ideas. It helps detects plagiarism (Meo & Talha, 2019). By quantifying how similar the work is to other writeups, the tool can affirm an author’s honesty during writing.
Part 2
As a nurse student pursuing an MSN program, I can maintain academic integrity through diverse strategies. Firstly, effective planning may lay the groundwork for improved academic integrity. By planning, I can keep track of important semester dates, assignment due dates, required readings, and specific deliverables of the semester. This will help eliminate the last-minute rash that may lead me to take unnecessary shortcuts. Additionally, maintaining contact with tools such as Turnitin and Grammarly that help contribute to academic integrity may also be helpful. These tools may inform whether I am veering off the track and detect points of imitation in my academic writing. Constant reading on academic integrity can also bolster my integrity. Provisions on the topic can guide me in identifying areas of imitation, allowing me to take corrective measures.
As a professional nurse, constant reading on academic integrity can help me maintain it. Resources such as textbooks and online publications on academic integrity will give me insight into how to maintain academic integrity and ensure the quality of my publications. An approach I intend to use is to preview the provisions of academic integrity before beginning any write-up. This will make me conscious of the rules of academic writing and integrity.
