Analysis of the QI plan for a healthcare facility

Analysis of the QI plan for a healthcare facility

SWOT analysis of the QI plan

QI requires health facilities to continuously redesign the existing care delivery processes and systems (Backhouse & Ogunlayi, 2020). A SWOT analysis defines an organization’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats that can support the QI plan. This is a SWOT analysis of the QI plan for The North Hospital:

Strengths

The North Hospital has sufficient experience and specialized healthcare.

The facility has established itself as a center for excellent health services.

It has sufficient facilities to support the delivery of inpatient, outpatient, long-term care, and emergency care services.

The management has invested well in advanced diagnostics and patient care tools.

The facility’s accounts show high operating profit margins in the last five years.

Weaknesses

Due to its popularity, The North Hospital’s high patient flow sometimes overburdens the health staff despite their high numbers.

There are numerous information silos due to the separation of departments.

The management has not yet established a consistent supply chain and relies on outsourcing other firms for supplies.

Opportunities

The facility can easily collaborate with the local community to promote improved care strategies and service delivery.

The existing qualified staff supports the efficient adoption and implementation of evidence-based practices in patient care.

The facility has already integrated various technologies into its operations, which can support the adoption of telehealth and telemedicine services. Telehealth and telemedicine services create opportunities for health accessibility, safety, reduced costs, and improved patient experiences (Harkey et al., 2020).

Threats

A new well-equipped facility is entering the market

Poaching of its qualified staff by the new facility

Current uncertainty in health policies and regulations

Healthcare technology-targeted cybersecurity threats

New and emerging chronic health conditions with no known cures

Quality Tools that Assist in the Analysis of a Potential Issue in a Process.

The fishbone diagram is the most efficient quality tool for analyzing a patient’s elopement from a Nursing Home. A fishbone can help healthcare leaders and a QI team brainstorm possible problem factors (cms.gov, n.d.). The focus will be placed on patient factors such as mental health and patient experiences, staff factors such as staffing levels and facility security, organizational factors such as processes and costs of care, and care environment factors such as safety and quality of care when analyzing the potential causes of patient elopement.

Benchmarking a facility/program/plan with other facilities/programs/plans is important as it can easily evaluate and identify how the facility/ programs/plans can compete with the competition in the market. It can also create new insights into planning or QI approaches, such as the use of new diagnostic technologies. For instance, benchmarking The North Hospital with the new facility, its programs, and plans can determine how ready the facility is for the incoming competition and what needs to be done to remain competitive and maintain its market share.

Once launched, an effective quality action team ensures that every part of the QI plan is achieved. Effective quality action teams also ensure the use of data and evidence to support QI and the transformation of such evidence into practice (Backhouse & Ogunlayi, 2020).

Conflicts in a quality action team need to be addressed as they arise. I would address such conflicts by creating an environment of quality dialogue and communication and being impartial in developing a solution.

Rewarding the achievements of a quality action team is highly recommended. It motivates the teams to scale up efforts further toward continuous QI. Such rewards can be extrinsic and intrinsic. Rewarding such teams can also motivate the involvement of others within the organization in QI.

Question

Based on the information you have acquired this semester, as well as through conducting some additional research, please complete 2 of the three questions below. Each response should be 3/4 of a page to 1 page in length.

A. Develop a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) analysis of the QI plan for a healthcare facility; select a hypothetical facility/agency of your choice.

Analysis of the QI plan for a healthcare facility

Analysis of the QI plan for a healthcare facility

B. As the new QI Director of an 800-bed Acute Care Hospital, you have been asked to develop a strategic plan to assess the current QI program and determine any required revisions or updates. Please complete a hypothetical assessment and a plan to address any required updates. Additionally, a brief QI work plan for proposed topics will be developed for the remainder of 2022.

C. Quality tools are not those found in our toolbox at home but assist in the analysis of a potential issue or concern in a process.

Discuss what quality tool you think would be most efficient for analyzing a patient’s elopement from a nursing home. What measures would you use to drill down to the possible contributing factors?
Discuss the importance of benchmarking with other facilities/programs/plans and provide an example of how you can do this (remember the 1st discussion).
Discuss the importance of launching an effective quality action team.
How would you handle conflicts in a quality action team?
How would you recommend rewarding the achievements of a quality action team?
