American History – 1790 to 1860

American history – 1790 to 1860

The period 1790 through 1860 followed the formation of the federal government. One of the key concerns during the period was the economic state of the New Union Civil War. A report on public credit was released in January 1790, stressing the need to secure the government’s creditworthiness (P  Scott Corbett et al., 2017). It was recommended that debts owed to private individuals and foreign entities by states and the former confederation government be repaid in full, at face value. The move was intended to secure the future financial welfare of the union. The government also made moves to create a vibrant economy by opening up the bond market to accommodate its citizens.

From 1819 onwards, a significant financial depression occurred in the US. It started with major industrialization throughout the North East. The first major sale of the public domain took place during the period. As a result, many people moved to the West to participate in the trade. Banks and other financial institutions gave out insecure loans, leading to a panic that led to one of the major and most prolonged economic depressions in US history (P  Scott Corbett et al., 2017). The country was not to recover until the 1820s. Also, significant infrastructural development funded by the government and local investors took place during the period. Another major event during the period was the creation of new social classes that led to a distinctive culture.

Henceforth from the 1820s onwards, major democratic reforms took place. Firstly, power shifted from the rich to the majority. Also, universal manhood suffrage was adopted, granting voting rights to all white male adults (P  Scott Corbett et al., 2017). Most states adopted their constitutions and became largely independent. Besides, the period is characterized by a rise in party politics. Reforms during the period also meant that the popular vote mattered in the election of a president.

Consequently, events after 1820 included slave rivalry and state expansion. For instance, the Missouri crisis opened up wounds of states with enslaved people. There was a general feeling that these states were being discriminated against. Texas (where slavery was allowed) was created in 1936, occasioning the US-Mexican war (P  Scott Corbett et al., 2017). Slavery sympathizers were expanding against the will of Mexicans.
