The students should learn how to solve additional problems using drawings, equations, and objects up to 15. It would be a progression over the unit; by the end, they should be able to add 0-20.

●       Stack the dice to solve addition problems from 0-20

●       Students are placed in groups. Group B and D. Group B works with numbers from 0-10, and Group D works with numbers  from 0-15

●       Students are placed in the higher Group M, where they work with numbers from 0-20.

Stack the dice to solve problems on the flashcards

Write digits randomly on the dice for students to solve addition and subtraction problems.

Reflection

Most students abhor studying mathematics due to the notion that the subject is difficult. As a result, students develop negative attitudes that interfere with their concentration in class. For this reason, it is vital to embrace an activity-based teaching approach to ensure they understand the important concepts. A negative attitude in math impacts the student’s ability to comprehend basic concepts such as addition and subtraction. Notably, “Addition and Subtraction” is one of the most important topics in mathematics as it is a stepping stone to learning the relationship between numbers. Teaching addition and subtraction requires a hands-on strategy that inspires concentration and participation throughout the lessons.

Creating the graphic organizer was instrumental in understanding the importance of

activity-based learning, especially for lower-grade learners. In my quest to ensure a successful

lesson, I encountered various challenges. Firstly, it was a challenge to create fun activities that

would draw the learners’ attention to ensure full concentration throughout the activity. Notably,

grade one students are in an early stage of learning; thus, they are likely to lose focus in class. In addition, at this early stage of learning, these students might encounter difficulty understanding crucial concepts, hence the need for activities. I ensured that the students were placed in groups to gradually develop their addition abilities. The grouping began with Group B, where they worked with numbers from 0 to 10. The middle group was group D, where they worked with numbers 0 to 15. The highest group was Group M, where they worked with numbers 0 to 20.

Apart from choosing the ideal activity, I also encountered a challenge in settling for the most viable materials for use in the activities. It was vital that I consider each student’s social and economic background to ensure they bring easily affordable materials. For this reason, I settled for plastic dice since they are cheap and easily available in stores. Additionally, I asked the students to bring flashcards with multi-colored numbers to make them virtually fun. In my opinion, I am obliged to ensure that the students enjoy a seamless learning experience that incorporates fun to guarantee a lasting impact.
