ACT 3- Literary Theory Chart
1 to 3 potential topics from 1 work of literature (The Latehomecomer, a poem, or a short story) that we have read or will read. (Complete one to three boxes in this column). | Text Evidence that matches the topic(s) you are interested in (all three of the boxes in this column must be completed).
1 to 3 sentences of quoted text in EVERY box. |
Apply one type of literary criticism to the work. What does the lens of critical theory help you understand? Why is it important to society? (Complete all three boxes in this column). |
1. Oppression | “For the families who surrendered to the soldiers, there were death and reeducation camps, syringes of hot liquid inserted into trembling veins, days in the blistering sun digging useless craters into the earth”(p.9). | The historical criticism is applicable in explaining the quote linked to oppression. The lens of critical theory helps me understand that the narrator’s experiences were during the times of colonization when powerful nations used to capture other nations by attacking them and killing those who resisted. These events are important to society because they inform people about the challenges faced by those who fought for their freedom, thus motivating them to appreciate their freedom. |
2. Immigration | “In Ban Vinai Refugee Camp, my father told me I would go to school in America. Phanat Nikhom was not America, but it was a transition camp to America” (p.96). | Historical criticism is applicable to explaining the quote. The lens of critical theory helps me understand that the author was living a miserable life before deciding to move to America. The quote also suggests that the author and her family were moving from their home countries in search of a better life and were hopeful that their destination would offer them what they were looking for. Understanding the hopefulness of immigrants is important to society because it enables the people in societies where the immigrants live to appreciate them and support them. |
3. Democide | “People were kept in the village camp for months, and then the Laotian and Vietnamese airplanes would pass overhead, and many of the people would die afterward. There was no need for guns. My mother, grandmother, and aunts did not know it, but chemical warfare was being used in the killing of the Hmong” (p.26). | The Marxist criticism is applicable in analyzing the quote and its link to the topic. The lens of critical theory helps me understand that power can be destructive if it is not controlled. This understanding is important to society because it can help individuals identify when power is being misused to oppress them. |
