Achieving Program Outcomes and Competencies
In this course, NR603, the integration of theoretical knowledge and practical skills has significantly contributed to my ability to meet Program Outcome 5: advocating for positive health outcomes through compassionate, evidence-based, collaborative advanced nursing practice. This reflection will explore how specific learning experiences have facilitated this achievement, highlighting the application of key concepts in real-world settings.
Meeting Program Outcome 5
Throughout the course, I have learned more about creating effective management strategies for patients and families with one or more comorbidities. For instance, when I did the different case analyses, I had to interpret both subjective and objective data to come up with a correct diagnosis. Information gathering through this process focuses on the assessment process and the need to make informed clinical decisions that yield positive patient outcomes (Toney-Butler & Thayer, 2023). Having implemented such principles, I have enhanced my ability to secure my patients’ care that conforms to the best standards set by clinical evidence.
Additionally, patient and family engagement is another important input that would positively contribute to attaining Program Outcome 5, whereby patients and families are involved in the development of management plans. The course stressed the need to respect the patient’s perception, belief system, and ethnic origin. For instance, in one of the case simulation scenarios, I need to work with a patient’s family to ensure that the care being provided suits their desired health outcomes and cultural practices. It made me realize the importance of caring for the patient and the value of working together towards the best health outcomes.
AACN Essentials Domain 6: Communication in Advanced Nursing Practice
The competency I chose from AACN Essentials Domain 6 is 6.1j: Communicate nursing’s unique disciplinary knowledge to strengthen interprofessional partnerships. The assignments set in the course have given me several chances to develop my written and oral communication with reference to interpersonal relations within the scope of professional practice. For instance, when appearing for group discussions and presentations, I tried explaining the nursing concepts in a manner that was easily understandable and persuasive even to people from other fields. This practice has assisted me in showing the staff the importance of nursing to patient care, therefore improving staff relations (Schleiff et al., 2020).
Another example is the use of electronic health records for effective sharing of patients’ information. This experience also helped me understand the need for accurate and polite language to preserve the confidentiality of the patient’s information and create teamwork. Enhancing EHR documentation and my skills in sharing information in this system have allowed me to work in a team and improve patients’ outcomes.
NONPF Independent Practice Competency: Holistic, Person-Centered Care
The competency I selected from the NONPF Independent Practice Competency is NP 2.1f: Practice holistic person-centered care to include confidentiality, privacy, comfort, emotional support, mutual trust, and respect. This course has been helpful in confirming the need to assess patients in much more than just the physical health aspect, as there are also emotional and psychological aspects. An example is caregiving during the decision-making process, with a lot of concern being paid to the patient’s emotions. I have also been able to bring out physical comfort and ensure that the patients get to know me, hence making them comfortable and willing to open up, which is very important for care.
In addition, the course has emphasized the confidentiality and privacy of the patient in all aspects of the patient care. I also learn how to balance the need for patient privacy and, at the same time, deliver care with dignity and compassion while doing case studies and ethical decision-making. The model of care that I have adopted in my practice involves taking care of the whole person, and it will go a long way in complementing my advanced nursing practice.
