Why I selected this individual and/or team and how they will support my success in the MSN program and as a practicing nurse:

Notes:

The pursuit of excellent psychiatric care has gained traction across the American healthcare system and other healthcare systems worldwide. As a future psychiatric nurse, I believe that connecting with nurses making a difference in psychiatric care is paramount. I selected Kate Williams because of her excellence in psychiatric research and my personal relationship with her. As I embark on this educational journey, having constant communication with people making a difference in psychiatric care will become essential. Their perspective on psychiatric nursing, along with what I learn from the conventional educational process, will not only enhance my focus on the same but also help point out gap areas that require keen consideration. Building a network around people like Kate will also help me maintain my professional focus on improving psychiatric care through shared goals and experiences and elevate my standards and portfolio in psychiatric nursing. It will also help me identify challenges facing nurse professionals and how best nurses can maneuver these challenges to maintain high-quality nursing care for all.

NETWORK MEMBER 2

Name: Ester Martini

Title: Regional Coordinator

Organization: American Nurses Association

Academic or Professional: Professional

Why I selected this individual and/or team and how they will support my success in the MSN program and as a practicing nurse:

Notes:

A reflection on the evolutionary nursing journey gives insight into the role of nursing professional organizations in advocating for nurses’ welfare and wellness. Indeed, modern nursing takes into consideration all factors within nurses’ environments that affect their level of service delivery. American Nurses Association is a now new player in the nursing profession. Through its advocacy roles, it has fostered high standards of nursing practice, enhanced nurses’ wellness, and ensured that nurses’ work environment is safe. For these reasons, I have included Ester Martini in my network.

Establishing a connection with a professional organization remains important for all nurses. This necessity stems from the belief in collective responsibility and strength in numbers. As a nurse enthusiast and an upcoming psychiatric nurse, I believe that partnering with or joining a professional organization places me in a better position to voice my patients’ concerns. Through such organizations, I can challenge systemic problems affecting psychiatric care, such as access to psychiatric care and underfunding. Engaging with Ester Martini has given me further insight into the role of professional organizations in improving nurses’ wellness. Through these organizations, nurses have challenged the system that traditionally disfavored nurses and affirmed the role of nurses in healthcare. With increasing cases of mental health illnesses and an overall deterioration in the quality of care accorded to patients with these illnesses, the American Nurses Association and other professional organizations can help improve the quality of psychiatric nursing care. Establishing a connection with ANA will also enable me to showcase my nursing advocacy roles. As a nurse advocate, I will be able to find a platform in which I can raise issues affecting my patients and how the healthcare system can be manipulated to improve the quality of care received by the patients.

NETWORK MEMBER 3

Name: Walden University Library

Title: Research Center

Organization: Walden University

Academic or Professional: Academic

Why I selected this individual and/or team and how they will support my success in the MSN program and as a practicing nurse:

Notes:

Healthcare research has continuously informed quality improvement measures in healthcare. At the core of most healthcare research is the library. Libraries represent an assortment of resources that help learners better understand the contents they learn from the class. The Walden University Library is no exception. This University Institution contains a wide volume of books, online resources, journals, and other materials that help students further their academic courses. The significance of the library is based on its ability to bolster learners’ knowledge in various aspects of their academic learning. Resources obtained from the library can widen learners’ perspectives on various aspects of nursing as well as help them solve problems they may encounter during their learning processes.

The vastness of the Walden University Library has perhaps contributed to its underutilization. Without sufficient guidance from the library personnel and the research center, students may waste a lot of time searching for valuable resources to help them in their academic courses. For this reason, I believe that establishing a connection with the research center under the Walden University Library is essential. This connection will considerably help me navigate the resources available in the library as well as how best to utilize them. As a student researcher, I believe that my research skills will be bolstered when I learn from people who have excelled in research and who have the basics of student research, such as searching for information, validating the authenticity, accuracy, and reliability of resources, and how best to translate research into practice. The Walden University Library and the research center epitomize research excellence. Engaging them through my academic journey will thus help me improve my grades.

NETWORK MEMBER 4

Name: Teresa-Smith Bennett

Title: Student Coordinator

Organization: Walden University

Academic or Professional: Academic

Why I selected this individual and/or team and how they will support my success in the MSN program and as a practicing nurse:

Notes:

Learning is a compound process often marred with several uncertainties and challenges. It is for these reasons that student advisors become handy. In this regard, their role is to help learners understand their academic programs and how they can meet their academic goals. Enrolling in the Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner program, I must admit that I didn’t have the answers to all the questions I have been asking myself regarding my career choice. The program was wide, and I found difficulties relating the outcomes to my career goals. I selected Teresa-Smith because of her willingness to help and her vast experience in handling students.

As a psychiatric nurse with specific interpersonal relations skills, Teresa-Smith is better poised to help me identify my strengths and weaknesses throughout the course. I believe that through frequent engagements with her, I will be able to find a higher purpose in the course as well as to synchronize my career goals with the course outcomes defined in the psychiatric nursing program. Her willingness to help makes relating with her simple.

Module 3 | Part 3: Research Analysis

Step 1: Research Analysis

Topic of Interest: Psychiatric Nursing
Research Article: Include full citation in APA format, as well as link or search details (such as DOI) Ventosa-Ruiz, A., Moreno-Poyato, A., Lluch-Canut, T., Vaquerizo-Cubero, A., Vidal-Pascual, X., Gil-Guiñón, F., & Puig-Llobet, M. (2022). Impact of collaborative nursing care on the recovery process of Mental Health Day Hospital users: A mixed-methods study protocol. BMJ Open, 12(3). https://doi.org/10.1136/bmjopen-2021-057969
Professional Practice Use:

One or more professional practices use of the theories/concepts presented in the article

The article is a demonstration of the significance of the convergent care theory in professional nursing practice. This theory takes into consideration the limitation of one discipline in providing effective healthcare and advocates for interprofessional collaborations and teamwork during healthcare delivery. As per the convergent care theoretical postulates, the divergence of healthcare cadres and differences in their roles with patients should be leveraged by healthcare systems to optimize care. This requires that all healthcare professionals involved in care delivery synchronize their goals with the patients and work together to solve the presenting healthcare puzzles. The effectiveness of the collaborative paradigm in psychiatric care and other nursing fields will, however, depend on the ability of healthcare professionals to demonstrate respect for self and others, maintain accountability, communicate effectively, and have role interdependence.

The study utilizes a mixed methods design in its approach. The evidence is thus stronger. This design also inspires more confidence in the findings.

The study utilizes a mixed methods design. However, concerning the quantitative aspect of the study, the intervention prevents the use of pure experimental designs that provide randomization of subjects. In the absence of randomization, the risk of bias increases.

The article details the significance of collaborative nursing. Findings from the article emphasize the significance of nursing collaborations in improving the overall quality of nursing care and clinical outcomes for patients with mental health illnesses. Their relevancy to psychiatric nursing, as well as their purposefulness towards addressing quality concerns in psychiatric care, makes it useful in mental healthcare. As the pursuit of quality care in psychiatric nursing increases, nurses and other healthcare professionals will resort to innovative quality improvement measures. Research underlining quality improvement measures in psychiatric care such as the one highlighted will thus become valuable in this regard. Ventosa-Ruiz et al. (2022) note the importance of collaborative nursing in improving mental healthcare. Findings from the study can, therefore be used to inform aspects of psychiatric care.
The article can be analyzed from varied perspectives: The elucidation of factors within nursing care and service delivery that impact the quality of the care they deliver can be used to inform future psychiatric nursing practice. Additionally, these factors can form the basis of future research interventions necessary for improving aspects of psychiatric nursing. In relation to the qualitative aspects, under-reporting accustomed to the participants not being able to accurately report what they are asked during the interview may occur. This may affect the data collection phase and ultimately influence the findings.

Step 2: Summary of Analysis

A Description of My Approach to Identifying and Analyzing Peer-reviewed Research

Peer-reviewed research can be located in online databases such as CIANHL and PubMed. The ability of a learner or a researcher to identify resources that meet the criterion for consideration as scholarly articles is significant in identifying peer-reviewed articles. The currency, relevance, accuracy, purpose, and authority criteria can be used to elucidate research articles that can be used as a basis for evidence-based practice. Articles selected should be timely, accurate, relevant to the topic under scrutiny, and able to address the research question. The components of an article that should be checked to ascertain whether or not it is peer-reviewed include the presence of the authors’ names and credentials, the structure, whether it is intended for the audience, the language used to write the article, and the date. A peer-reviewed article should be written in formal language, dated, written by scholars, and focused on an aspect of the study.

Strategies Effective in Finding Peer-reviewed Research

Several strategies can be used to locate peer-reviewed articles. The two strategies I found to be effective during my search include using the university library database and applying specific search terms while navigating online databases. The university library is a valuable resource in this regard. It contains a pool of peer-reviewed articles from which a researcher can select. The use of specific search terms such as “scholarly” can also result in the isolation of peer-reviewed articles from reputable databases such as PubMed.

Resource for Future Use

In the future, I intend to utilize online databases such as PubMed for my peer-reviewed research. Online databases provide navigation assistants that make it easy to locate peer-reviewed articles. They are also easy to access and provide endless articles from which researchers can select. Most sources obtained from online databases do not fetch any cost consideration and can thus be used for quick reviews.
