A Sociological Breakdown of The Crown- Norms, Beliefs, and Subcultures

A Sociological Breakdown of The Crown- Norms, Beliefs, and Subcultures

I recently watched “The Crown,” and I was enthralled with its nuanced depiction of historical events as seen through the eyes of the British royal family. A captivating combination of historical knowledge and enjoyment is provided by the meticulous attention to detail in both the narrative and the production design. In “The Crown,” the British royal family is portrayed through several cultural universals, including royal rites, rituals, traditions, beliefs, and practices common to all societies. The show explores the norms of the royal family, encompassing both formal and informal standards that govern behavior inside the family, as well as legal rules such as following procedures during official ceremonies.

As it portrays the British monarchy’s propensity to regard its customs and ideals as superior to those of other civilizations, the series also tackles the idea of ethnocentrism. Ethnocentrism refers to the tendency to assume that one’s own culture, beliefs, and way of life are superior or the norm compared to other cultures (Schaefer, 2017). How the characters respond to obstacles or modifications in the royal dynamics demonstrates this ethnocentric viewpoint. The dispute between the royal family’s generations highlights conflicting values and views, illustrating the cultural variation that may exist even within an apparently homogeneous community.

Moreover, “The Crown” showcases instances of innovation within the royal institution as the characters grapple with adapting to changing societal norms and expectations (Huang, 2023). The conflict between old values and the changing cultural landscape is reflected in some characters’ opposition to change and their presentation of new ideas. Finally, “The Crown” deftly examines the conflict between customs, beliefs, and norms, showing how even a system as deeply ingrained in culture as the monarchy faces difficulties and changes.
