A Sensorial Artifact for Communication

A Sensorial Artifact for Communication

Smart aliens have highly developed sense organs, such as seeing capacity, hearing, and a sense of touch, which could be even better than human ones (Heersmink, 2021). I predict they are curious, intellectually capable, and not averse to establishing a peaceful contact. It is the musings of these thinking processes that will figure into the construction of my artifact, a small, multisensory cube that will weigh not more than five pounds and that will be a combination of light, sound, touch, and smell: A Sensorial Artifact for Communication.

The artifact produces a series of harmonic music notes that follow the Fibonacci sequence—a geometrical rule occurring all over the universe and nature. Optically, it beats out in fairy-tale harmony with the colored lights on primary colors, which is symbolic of the concept of elementary communication features (Heersmink, 2021). Tactilely, there are the raised patterns of a binary coded dots and dashes forming language on the surface; it is a simple system of language. Furthermore, the artifact diffuses a low-toxicity aroma whose base is composed of floral esters, which were selected because of their complexity and natural source, which may be identified as natural biological material.

Its essence is the message of peaceful contact and the wish to learn. The rational mathematical sounds and binary rhythms present logical forms of information that indicate intelligence (Fraknoi et al., 2022). The aroma and illumination elements involve other senses, indicating sentimental and organic compounds.

The artifact can be read by more than one sensorial mode, thereby enhancing the possibility of one of them being understood. The perceptions of the universal patterns and the biological matter of life, as laid out in astrobiology, contribute to the design judgment. This object is a greeting and invitation.

Messaging Intelligent Life Assignment

NO AI USE AT ALL:

The first step to messaging intelligent life is to define intelligence. You will use your imagination, plus explore ideas of other life forms in space.

In this assignment, each student will create an artifact to send to outer space with the goal of contacting and eliciting a response from intelligent life.

Submission for messaging intelligent life is a PowerPoint or a written document. The student will describe the artifact and design with emphasis on what intelligent life is targeted for communication. The PowerPoint is to be at least 5 slides, or written document 250 words in length.

In summary, your presentation should include the following:
  • Identification of the assumptions you made about the E.T. (Extraterrestrial) to receive this artifact.
  • Description of the message and how this message is expressed to the E.T.
  • Description of decisions you made on design of the artifact, providing reasoning behind your decisions.
