A Description of the Teacher as a Model Provider and Facilitator

A teacher, also formally known as an educator or schoolteacher, is an individual who assists students in acquiring competence, virtue, and knowledge. Most people take teachers for granted, yet they have a lasting effect on people’s lives. Parents are the first teachers to children because, from birth, they are under the care of parents until they attain the school-going age to join preschool. Once they reach the school-going age, children start learning from their teachers more than from their parents. They begin seeing teachers as great role models, providers, and facilitators in endorsing the skills and awareness necessary to improve reading ability and language learning.

The Teacher as a Model

A model is something that one looks up to or imitates. Therefore, teachers are the primary role models for their learners as they influence their values, attitudes, and behaviors. A teacher as a positive role model is an example to learners by motivating them to live meaningful lives because they are a constant presence in learners’ lives. As such, they impact children more than their parents. A teacher being a role model entails showing learners how to be sensible about the world and calmly express diverse ideas. This way, teachers can model for pupils how they need to act when communicating with others and how they can actively listen to other people’s views. Tilga et al. (2018) affirm that teachers’ connections with learners impact their learning and growth. A perfect learning space is presented when the teacher is rich in language and utilizes different vocabularies in explaining things to learners. The teacher can be a model because they can model several things in children’s literacy and language learning, not just speech but also their behaviors and attitudes in writing, reading, and listening. Children listen, watch their teachers, peers, and parents, and imitate their intonation, sentence patterns, and grammar use. Therefore, a teacher should use descriptive talks by reflecting on discussions about the connection between objects, events, or concepts that an individual is pointing out to another. They can do this by using different words while describing events, activities, and objects; then, the learners will do the same. In addition, the teacher can be a model by being thought-provoking and designing topics that trigger dialogues and interest students. Furthermore, the teacher should use facial expressions and gestures to assist learners in showing processes or concepts that start an argument or debate and encourage them to connect ideas to real-world circumstances.

Finally, a teacher can be a model to learners by modeling poetry reading and storytelling activities. While engaging in such activities, learners will copy or imitate the gestures, especially the teacher’s body language, expression, and remarks. While teaching language, storytelling is often a perfect way of improving a student’s imagination and vocabulary because it incorporates tongue twisters, imagery, and rhymes, which are beneficial for learners (Machado, 2016). Such a practical teaching method enables learners to understand literature and language more deeply. Also, when a learner narrates a story in class, and the teacher listens attentively, such a gesture demonstrates to learners that it is vital to listen to others for them to feel that whatever they share is equally valuable.

The Teacher as a Provider

Teachers also have the role of providing instructional material and resources to their learners and fellow teachers. Most institutional teachers assist their colleagues in sharing instructional resources, which can include instructional materials, reading materials, websites or videos, or audio for student use. Teachers can also share these professional resources like books, unit and lesson plans, articles, and even assessment tools (Gharti, 2019). The current lecture teaching methods and the avenues of attaining information have changed. Presently, learning is student-centered. Thus, it is the teachers’ role to develop an interactive and rich learning environment based on support, care, and love. Here, the teacher is to take up the parent role of caring that champions learning and motivates the student to learn. In addition, Huang (2018) insists that an appropriate learning environment starts when students feel safe with the teacher to open up about their problems and knowledge. Teachers’ role as providers is to supervise learners, conduct detailed assessments and evaluations, and offer the best curriculum that sets standards for better learning. The teacher’s role is to design a proper way of assessing and evaluating learners’ performance, which is result-oriented.

The greatest role of a teacher as the provider is to develop meaningful educational experiences for learners that can assist them in applying the acquired knowledge in real life. Even though the current world is full of learning sources, the teacher remains the primary source of learning resources. For instance, numerous assessment methods are utilized to determine whether the learners are growing emotionally, cognitively, socially, literary, and language-wise. Standardized tests are one of the ways of assessing a child’s knowledge, even though some parents dispute it (Gharti, 2019). The educator’s role is to guide the learners on having a total commitment to their studies by ensuring they offer learners enough resources, whether for reading or playing.

The teacher must also support the students in developing their cognitive process by being attentive in class and recalling everything they have learned. It is through learning and education that learners develop socio-emotional competencies. Teachers are providers because they understand their learners and give special attention to those who need it (Huang, 2018). For instance, the teacher’s role in a class with special learners is to provide additional or special directives to such students with learning challenges. Other learners need extra learning hours to be at the same level as their classmates. Therefore, teachers require flexibility to offer such services, address the areas of weaknesses identified by learners, and assist in reinforcing their learning capabilities by using more examples, simple sentence construction, and vocabulary.

The Teacher as a Facilitator

A facilitator is a person or something that makes a process or an action easier or more simplified. Learning as an approach could be challenging and complex for learners. Therefore, the educator’s role is to make the learning process simple and easier. The teacher can design simple learning strategies such as creating groups and picture learning among children (Naibaho, 2019). This way, a teacher can enhance positive results for learners with educational challenges that cause them disappointments. The teacher would share whatever they should learn with the learners and guide them on how to learn it. Teachers must be initiators of knowledge at all times.

The primary thing is to identify when to step down and allow learners to take the front stage in learning. The role of the teacher as a facilitator is to support education but let learners teach themselves. The teacher’s role as a helper assists students in learning new ideas, boosts students’ morale to engage in research, analyze ideas using critical thinking, and make objective decisions. In such a scenario, a teacher as a facilitator begins by teaching learners and giving examples, then letting the students discuss themselves and come up with various examples to reinforce the learned concept (Lee & Tan, 2018). This way, the teacher encourages learners to think and understand how some ideas are related to their lives. In such a case, the teacher can divide learners into groups and then announce the learning program since presently, teaching is learner-centered, and the teacher is a facilitator to inspire the students to be self-governing while seeking solutions to issues and building on past knowledge.

Conclusion

Teachers have several roles as models, providers, and facilitators of the learning process. These roles are essential in assisting learners in advancing their literary and language skills. Teachers can realize this role in numerous ways. Essentially, the teacher as a model role focuses on the proper physical conduct of a teacher, which a student is likely to imitate. The facilitator role is founded on enthusiasm, while the teacher as a provider focuses on offering the right educational resources that promote learning to the learners. Therefore, it is clear that each role is essential. Thus, none must be sacrificed for another, but a teacher should create a balance to achieve all of them
